Sir:-
I am directed by the Marquess of Salisbury to
transmit to you copies of recent correspondence with
the Admiralty, as marked in the margin, on the ques-
tion of providing more suitable vessels for the pro-
ettey / te
7tection of British trade on the West River and the
Yangtze.
With reference to that portion of the letter
from the Admiralty of the 7th instant which deals
with the steps to be taken by the Viceroy Li
Chang, in co-operation with the Governor of Hongkong
Hung
and the Commander in Chief on the China Station for
the suppression of piracy on the West River, I am to
inquire whether Her Majesty's Secretary of State for
the Colonies has received any report on the subject
from Sir Henry Blake since addressing to him the
despetch
